Technocapitalism, climate grief and ancient history collide in Xanthe Dobbie's single-take desktop performance exploring the human urge to seek immortality.
The Long Now by artist Xanthe Dobbie, ponders the human urge to seek immortality. Set to an original score by composer Jorde Heys, this new experimental desktop performance collides technocapitalism against climate grief against ancient history, refracting these competing narratives through the technicolour lens of the internet.
Featuring original epic hero Gilgamesh and the disembodied deep fake voice of Alan Rickman, The Long Now collapses histories, illuminating ancient and contemporary myth-making practices.

Two-screen animation installation
Artist statement
“Tohaku Hasegawa painted the ‘Pine Trees’ screens around 1595, but the vivid brushwork makes it look as if the ink has just dried. I have been staring at ‘Pine Trees,’ for a very long time, wrestling with the unimprovable perfection of the original. About a year ago I started sampling the image, making loose, gestural ink drawings, co-opting myself into the narrative. This drawing series grew, intermingling with fragments of work from other idols, Hiroshige and Hokusai, and a shorthand of turbulent events from my own life.
The hand drawn ink animation is made for two-screen projection, deliberately drifting in and out of sync with each other. With no stable connection, the films cooperate and collide. Buddhist ideas of non-duality come to mind as we take off and find ourselves tethered at the same time. The drawings swirl, hats fly off, a shout goes up- what’s yours is mine, we’re going to be fine somehow. The work marks a period of great uncertainty- and considerable excitement- as I sought the courage to make big change happen, and to step out into a high wind.”

EIDOLON is a fanatical ode to the image - a myth built on fragmented histories. In the year 2000 Jennifer Lopez wore a green, Jungle-print dress designed by Donatella Versace, so iconic that she broke the internet and Google had to invent Google Images just to keep up. A few thousand years before, Helen of Troy’s face launched a thousand ships, kick-starting the legendary Trojan War. However, some say Helen never even went to Troy, that a carbon copy sculpted by the Gods - an eidolon - was sent in her place. If so, the ten year war was fought for an illusion. Our time is drenched in images and images of images. Merging past, present, and potential futures, this desktop performance dredges the internet, conflating facts and fictions in an act of post-truth digital myth-making.
